The Nockalmstraße with its 52 hairpins lies gently embedded in one of the most beautiful landscapes of Carinthia, the biosphere reserve Nockberge. But gentle is perhaps the wrong expression, because with 2 climbs to over 2,000 meters it represents a very attractive, but also physically demanding challenge for road cyclists.
The mountain road is certainly one of the great highlights in the Alpe-Adria region and leads from the the village Ebene Reichenau in the south-east to Innerkrems in the north-west. A total of 52 bends, which are affectionately called “Reidn” and carry names of well-known personalities, 2 passes with a total of 1418 meters of climbing, 2 fast descents on best asphalt and fantastic panoramas are called up – everything that makes the heart of us cyclists beat faster.
It is best to tackle the road early in the morning, because then the road is often car-free and you can smell the scent of the stone pine forests in the morning mist and hear the whistling of the marmots. The Nockalmstraße is opened from May to October and free of charge for cyclists (as of 2019).
The HALLER PRO+ CYCLING team will visit this cycling highlight in 2019 as part of the Alpe-Adria 3 countries Summer Tour.
