Road Community Carinthia – pleasure and joy of road cycling in the foreground
Sunday, September 15th
Under the motto “Indian Summer Ride”, 18 cyclists, including the Olympic medalist Gitti Köck, who came specially from Innsbruck, the Carinthian Olympic champion and ski jumping expert Martin Koch and the former Dutch professional cyclist Johnny Hoogerland, met to join a social group ride. After a small breakfast with our hosts of the B&B Hoogerland, we rode from Velden in the direction of the South Carinthian road bike region Rosental.
When planning the day tour, it was important to us to offer all participants a scenic, and depending on their personal fitness, suitable road bike experience. Therefore, two route options have been offered. The group ENJOY wanted to take it a bit more comfortable and shorter and had about 95km and 1000 meters of altitude on the plan. Most participants chose the somewhat longer PRO route, which was characterized by the climbs to Zellpfarre and Radsberg – altogether 115 km and 1,900 vertical meters.
In glorious late summer weather, the group rolled closed and at a steady pace, over the legendary Ironman Carinthia climb Ruppertiberg and further smaller climbs to Ferlach, where Emil Haller was already waiting with the Haller Cycling service station to offer us some snacks and drinks. After that, the groups separated. The ascent to Zellpfarre offered the opportunity to compete with Johnny Hoogerland, the former wearer of the mountain jersey of the Tour de France. Johnny just barely secured the KOM of the day ahead of our team member Andy Köstl. After a rapid descent back to the valley, the groups met again at the second refreshment point. And again, there were enough snacks and drinks to fortify for the last 40 kilometers.
These led the PRO group over the short, but very steep climb to the Radsberg. This time Johnny Hoogerland left no doubt about his shape and improved the former Strava KOM clearly. The ENJOY group passed this climb and headed straight for Lake Wörthersee. There, the groups met in Pörtschach and rolled back together to the finish. If only there had not been the spontaneous detour built by Mr. Hoogerland over the up to 25% steep ramp of Buchenweg in Velden … But that’s another story ….
On the sun terrace of the pension Hoogerland delicacies from the grill and a wonderful salad buffet was offered. Thanks to Alfred Koschat for the donation of Carinthian game specialties and to Mario Frattnig for the donation of a barrel of HIRTER beer. It was a great road bike day in which the fun and enjoyment was in the foreground, and the sportiness was still not neglected.
Feel like a pro, ride like a pro and enjoy your limit!
